Where to find your costs

A fund's ongoing charges are shown in its KID, under "What are the costs?". Even more useful is the annual report of costs and charges your bank must send you: it shows in euros what you paid during the year, products and services combined. Divide it by your portfolio's value and you get the percentage to enter here. For unit-linked and hybrid insurance policies, add the contract costs to the fund costs.

How the calculation works

Each year contributions are added to the capital, which grows by the gross return minus the annual cost. "Costs paid" is the yearly sum of the percentage applied to the capital. The calculation is before tax, which is the same in both scenarios. For what to do if you're paying too much, without rushing into decisions, read the guide on bank fund fees.
